Child safety is a very important matter, when you have a child, you'll know that keeping your child safe is a number one priority, there will be no messing around when it comes to this responsibility, but how do you know when your child is truly safe? There's one thing physically looking after the child, but actually knowing what products are truly safe is another story.

On thing that is constantly brought up is SIDS "sudden infant death syndrome" this is a terrible situation where a child might die with no clear sign as to what caused the problem. The child is at a higher risk of dying from SIDS during sleep and is often refereed to as Cot Death or Crib Death. Putting your child to sleep on its back can help decrease the odds that this might happen. It is also said that tobacco smoke could play a part in this.

But what are the determining factors that might put your child at risk? Well, there is a 50% increase in chance if the baby is male, and there are other factors too:-

No Breastfeeding
High room temperature
Excesses of bedding
Anemia
Sharing a bed with parents
Premature Birth

These are some of the things that should be avoided to prevent SIDS in your home. There are other things that may contribute and you should make sure that you check. If your cot/cot bed has a mattress, make sure that the mattress is made from non-toxic materials, this also applies to the mattress protector. "In 1989, a controversial piece of research by UK scientist Barry Richardson claimed that all cot deaths were the result of toxic nerve gases being produced through the action of fungus in mattresses on compounds of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. These chemicals are frequently used to make mattresses fire-retardant "

Make sure that you follow this advice, SIDS is a terrible thing and prevention is very important.
